因為在太陽系剛形成時, 是由一團雲塊漸漸壓縮成一個扁平的旋轉圓盤, 之後這些旋轉的氣體再漸漸聚集, 而形成行星與太陽。
因此, 在這個情況下行星通常會在相同的平面上運行.而在太陽系中偏離太陽系平面最遠的九大行星是冥王星, 其他大型行星幾乎都在同一平面上公轉著。
